This image of the speaker in Milton's elegy Lycidas suggests how subjective the character of the poem has become: there is no context except for the sheep and only the individual's clothing confirms his identity as a traditional pastoral shepherd. Henry Fuseli (1741-1825) planned an exhibition of paintings illustrating Milton, some of which have survived, but the project failed.
