River Thames, near Horton

The charming rural landscape round the Thames Valley village of Horton provided Milton with many rustic details for his two self-centered poems, "L'Allegro" and "Il Penseroso," which reinvoke the pastoral effects of Shakespeare's As You Like It and The Winter's Tale, while validating the Contemplative Life.
