The Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury, William Laud

This authoritarian figure ruthlessly enforced religious conformity and paid the penalty of execution by order of Parliament. Like Shakespeare, Milton often identified the moral limitations of such ecclesiastical authority figures.

This painting is after an original by Anthony van Dyck, and hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
