Milton's Pamphlet: "The Reason of Church-Government Urged Against Prelaty"

This pamphlet, The Reason of Church-Government Urged Against Prelaty, is one of a series of religious arguments reflecting Milton's own evolving religious values. Here he is attacking the structure of the Anglican church as represented by Archbishop Laud, in which bishops rule supreme, while Milton is advocating the more congregationally organized presbyterian church structure under the doctrines of John Calvin, who favored faith in God's mercy over good works as the source of Christian salvation.
